Manipulation under Anesthesia (MUA)

Dr. Gary Olson is certified to provide enhanced pain management through a procedure called manipulation under anesthesia (MUA). Patients from all over the Commack and Huntington areas come to Long Island Spine & Sports Injury Center for this specialized chiropractic care.

Manipulation under Anesthesia from your Commack & Huntington, NY Chiropractor

MUA is a non-invasive pain management treatment option for patients with acute and chronic pain conditions.

How MUA Works

Patients who undergo MUA are put under light anesthesia while chiropractic treatments are performed. Anesthesia relaxes the muscles by reducing discomfort and also suppresses some reflex responses. Ultimately, this enables the practitioner to carry out more effective treatments that might not otherwise be possible.

MUA can be combined with other pain management techniques, including standard chiropractic adjustments and Active Release Techniques (A.R.T.) therapy. MUA offers pain relief for patients without the need for continual prescription drug use or surgery.

Advantages of MUA

Manipulation under anesthesia can result in increased mobility, faster healing time and reduced pain for the patient. MUA can be used to treat patients who would normally be treated with more invasive methods, such as with surgery. For patients who cannot safely be treated with surgery, MUA is an excellent alternative that offers many of the same results as surgical and invasive procedures.

Conditions Treated by MUA

Patients seek manipulation under anesthesia for a variety of conditions including back and neck pain, pain in the joints and long-term pain syndromes. MUA can be used to treat scar tissues, lumbar disc disease, muscle spasms and adhesions, fibrous adhesions, frozen shoulders and knees and more. MUA is even used to treat pain resulting from surgeries.

Treatment Procedure

The patient undergoing MUA is put under a light sedation. Once the sedation takes effect, spinal manipulations, stretches, mobilizations and kinesthetic movements are conducted. The patient is then placed into care while he or she recovers from the anesthesia. Sometimes patients notice right away that the procedure has had a positive effect. Other times, the procedure must be done several times before the patient notices a substantial improvement.

Patients who undergo MUA must be driven home from the clinic, because patients who are given anesthesia cannot drive themselves. Following the procedure, patients must continue to conduct stretches on their own at home for continued improvement as well as have a follow up appointment with the chiropractor. MUA is an ongoing therapy that is not completed in one session.
