Knee Pain

Man with knee painKnee pain is a common problem that Dr. Gary Olson helps his patients with on a regular basis. Sometimes knee pain may be caused by a sudden injury, but often knee pain develops over time due to conditions like arthritis or unusual stress on the knee. Excessive knee pain can often lead people to avoid various activities, including walking, running or biking. Over time, the absence of physical activity can lead to other health problems and may intensify the pain in the knee. As with all injuries and health conditions, early treatment will help you return to your regular activities sooner.

3 Main Causes of Knee Pain

Accidents, falls, and sports injuries often cause knee pain. The ligaments, tendons, cartilage, knee cap, and bones can are all susceptible to injuries. Some of the most common knee injuries are:

  • Bursitis. Inflammation of the fluid-filled sacs that cushion the knee
  • Patellar tendinitis. Inflammation of the tendons connecting the muscles to the bones
  • Torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL)
  • Torn meniscus. The meniscus is the cartilage between the bones of the shin and thigh that absorbs shock impact

Mechanical problems:
Compensating for other injuries in the foot or ankles and other problems can place undue stress on the knee joint causing pain.

  • Dislocated kneecap.
  • Iliotibial band syndrome. Tightening of the ligament running from the pelvic bone to the outside of the tibia. This can cause it to rub on the outside of the thigh bone.
  • Foot or hip pain. Changes in the way you move can lead to more stress on the knee.

Different types of arthritis that can cause inflammation, swelling, and pain in the knee, including:

  • Gout
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Septic arthritis

Chiropractic Care Relieves Knee Pain

Lady experiencing knee painDr. Gary Olson will first identify the underlying cause of your knee pain and then determine the best treatment for the pain. This will require a thorough physical examination because even though the pain is located in the knee, the root cause may be elsewhere in the body.

As with any other joint in the body, chiropractic care seeks to restore a full range of movement and function while alleviating or eliminating the pain. Chiropractic care may be able to relieve knee pain, especially when combined with standard medical care and therapy. Spinal and joint manipulation can improve knee function by:

  • Increasing the range of motion in the knee and spine
  • Improving the coordination of joints, particularly the ankle, knee, and hips
  • Restoring the spine to normal movement
  • Relaxing the muscles of the body
  • Reducing contributing problems in the body

Dr. Gary Olson may also use other techniques to reduce inflammation in the knee, such as cold laser therapy, Active Release Techniques (A.R.T.), or ice massage. He may also apply special kinds of tape to the body (Kinesio Taping) to treat ligament injuries. This helps to stabilize the problem area and reduce inflammation and swelling.
