The cervical spine (neck) is designed to act as a shock absorber, cushioning the brain from harsh jolts, but it is also intended to provide a wide range of motion, allowing you to turn your head in multiple directions.
Neck pain is something most people are going to experience. When the cervical spine, which consists of the top 7 vertebrae in the spine (labeled C1–C7), has subluxations (misalignments) in addition to the pain you may experience other problems such as:
There are a wide variety of reasons people experience neck pain. The causes of neck pain can range from something as simple as sleeping in the wrong position to the impact of an auto accident. We help a lot of people dealing with neck pain caused by whiplash.
Other common causes of neck pain include:
Most people do not realize how much poor posture can lead to aches and pains, and neck pain is no exception. Our modern lifestyles and work environments make it easy for poor posture to cause neck pain. The use of smartphones, texting, and long hours spent in front of computers often lead to poor posture and neck pain. It is so prevalent that it is now referred to as "Tech Neck." Individuals with Tech Neck develope a forward head position that pulls against the natural curve of the neck (cervical spine), strains the muscles, tendons, and ligaments in the neck. As we spend more time looking down toward our laps, the vertebrae in the cervical spine are pulled out of alignment putting pressure on nerves and pinching nerves.
Only 10% of your nervous system is capable of feeling pain. The rest is responsible for the functions of your body including your heart, muscles, and internal organs. This means that subluxations (misalignments) might exist for a while before you experience pain, and often pain from these subluxations may first present themselves as headaches and/or migraines. Studies have shown the 95% of headaches originate from the neck.
Stress is another factor in neck pain and headaches. Many of us work in stressful jobs or face stressful situations. This stress can lead to people unconsciously tensing up their muscles throughout the neck and upper back. While a relaxing neck massage helps relieve the tension, the pull from tensed muscles can cause subluxations in the neck (cervical spine), which in turn can cause headaches and neck pain. Very often when someone says they have "a stress headache," it is due to subluxations from stress to the cervical spine.
