Acupuncture Treatment

Are you missing out on the benefits of acupuncture because you are worried about the needles or you are still not certain about the procedure? At Long Island Spine & Sports Injury Center our first priority is to provide patients with the highest quality of care. Offering services such as Physical Therapy and Acupuncture are part of our commitment to excellence. When combined with chiropractic care, acupuncture is a great aid in the rehabilitation and wellness process.

What to Expect from Acupuncture

According to the Chinese medicine system, there are over 1000 possible acupuncture points on the body. These points run along twelve invisible energy or meridian lines. The meridians carry our natural energy or qi through our bodies and each meridian is associated with a different organ system within the body. Don’t worry; our acupuncturist is not going to use 1000 needles during your appointment! Depending on a patient’s pain or illness, specific points are chosen to help restore the balance in the flow of qi energy. In most cases, no more than 8 to 10 needles are used during a single treatment.

Many first-time acupuncture patients are surprised to learn that acupuncture can be painless. Sensations such as warmth, tingling, numbness or a slight soreness at the insertion point are common, but patients often say they don’t even feel the hair-thin needles as they are placed or removed.

Your acupuncture appointment will last approximately 30 minutes. After a consultation, our acupuncturist will insert the needles then leave you to relax as the treatment works. Many patients find the process so relaxing they take a short refreshing nap while during their treatment.

Here are a few quick facts every patient should know before their first appointment:

  • Acupuncture needles are classified as medical devices by the FDA
  • Only sterile, disposable needles are used
  • Most No-Fault/Personal Injury insurances cover acupuncture treatments
  • Acupuncture is a complementary treatment that does not conflict with any other treatments or medications you are taking
  • The National Institutes of Health endorses acupuncture for the treatment of several conditions
  • Depending on needle placement, you may be able to receive treatment while fully dressed
  • Most patients report that acupuncture is a relaxing, energizing experience they look forward to receiving
